Eco damage: Rs 2 lakh fine on Coke, Pepsi

NEW DELHI, Sept. 16

THE Supreme Court today slapped a fine of Rs 2 lakh each, as costs, on soft drink majors Coca-Cola India and Pepsi India for the damage caused by them by painting rocks in the Kullu region of Himachal Pradesh with their advertisements.

Ten other organisations, including Malhotra Book Depot, Fena Detergent, Birla White Cement, State Bank of India, Sleepwell Mattresses, Nestle India Ltd and Annapurna Hotels have also been asked to pay Rs 1 lakh each by way of costs, for repairing the damage.The Supreme Court has directed the companies to deposit the costs with the Court Registry within 48 hours.

Among other organisations to whom notices have been issued are Ayur, Amaron Batteries, Hotel Trishul, Hotel Marble, Marble Gold Chai, Rin Zin Resort, Hotel Prashant, Gagan Vanaspati, Shiva Fun World, Water Fun World and Lake View Cafe.
