USDA extends commodity credit guarantee

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, Sept. 16

THE US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has authorised $25 million in supplier credit guarantees for sales of US agricultural commodities to India under the Commodity Credit Corporation's Supplier Credit Guarantee Programme (SCGP) for the fiscal year 2003.

Coverage up to 65 per cent of the principal is offered on credit terms extending up to 180 days. Beginning October 1 exporters (in the US) may apply for credit guarantee on first-come-first-served basis to cover sales of commodities.

The importer (in this case, Indian party) is required to use one or the other of two standard promissory note forms as evidence of its obligations to pay for the US agricultural commodities exported under SCGP.

For the current year, some import of soyabean oil into India was reportedly made under the credit guarantee scheme.
