Maran going to attend ASEAN meet in Brunei

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Sept. 14

THE first ASEAN Economic Ministers (AEM) - India Consultation will be held in Brunei on September 15. The Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Mr Murasoli Maran, will represent India at the meeting. The Consultation will also be co-chaired by Mr Pehin Dato Abdul Rahman Taib, Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, Brunei Darussalam.

An official release said that Mr Maran's visit gains importance as India is keen to engage with ASEAN and would like to have a bilateral Regional Trade and Investment Area (RTIA) in the long term.

This forum of interaction at the trade ministerial level will also provide useful inputs to the ASEAN India Summit scheduled for November 2002.

India became a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) in 1992 and Full Dialogue Partner in 1996. In November 2001, the ASEAN-India relationship was upgraded to Summit level.
