Panel identifies markets for auto exports

NEW DELHI, Sept. 14

AN inter-ministerial task force headed by the Secretary, Ministry of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises, Mr B.N. Jha, set up to facilitate exports of automobiles and automobile components from India, has identified regions like South-East Asia, Africa, Latin America and certain East European countries as potential buyers for Indian auto products.

The committee, which was constituted last month and had its first meeting on Wednesday, will function in conjunction with the committee set up by the Government earlier for implementation of the auto policy announced earlier, according to officials.

The committee has a mandate to identify new global markets suitable for Indian automobile and component manufacturers and will also identify bottlenecks at the regional, national and international levels.

The focus will be to increase exports of completely built units (CBUs) of cars, two wheelers and components.

The committee, which has representations from the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Department of Economic Affairs (DEA) and the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) also has representation from industry associations and industry captains.

The task force also includes President of the two automobile associations, namely Society of Indian Automobile manufacturers (SIAM) and Automobile Component Manufacturer's Association (ACMA) and industry captains like Mr J. Khattar of Maruti Udyog, Mr B.M. Munjal, Chairman of Hero Honda, Mr Venu Srinivasan, CMD of TVS Motor, Mr Ravi Kant, ED of Telco, and Mr V.K. Mehta, MD of Clutch Auto Components.
