KOCHI, Sept. 3

THE Coir Board and the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) have joined hands to introduce a PG diploma course in coir technology as a joint initiative programme.

A formal MoU in this regard was signed on Tuesday by the Coir Board Chairman, Mr Christy Fernandez, and the Vice Chancellor of CUSAT, Dr N. Unnikrishnan Nair. The total project cost is estimated at Rs 12.10 lakh, of which Rs 8.70 lakh would be borne by the Coir Board and the rest by CUSAT.

Initially, the funding support from the Board would be for a period of three years subject to yearly performance review by a monitoring committee.

Speaking to newspersons, the Coir Board Chairman said that the course was aimed at developing manpower capable of taking up middle to high level management assignments in manufacturing units and elsewhere in the coir sector.

"The existing manpower in the industry lacks adequate domestic and international exposure insofar as technology of production and modern marketing techniques are concerned."

The joint initiative with CUSAT was timely in the context of the Board taking up the role of promoter and facilitator to the industry, deviating from its earlier role as that of regulator, provider and marketer, he added.

Mr Fernandez also said that the coir industry had responded enthusiastically to this programme.

"The sector is at a turning point with the industry looking forward for modernising its technology in the wake of growing competition from synthetic products and other competing natural fibre products the world over."

According to him, the industry is now handicapped by the shortage of duly qualified and skilled middle and higher level management personnel.Mr Nair said that the courses would commence from October this year and the curriculum for the course includes chemical technology of coir, basic applied mechanics, fundamentals of engineering using coir `bhoovastra', and technology of spinning, weaving and finishing, apart from principles of accounting, export and domestic marketing. CUSAT would provide academic and institutional support to the programme and Coir Board would extend training and laboratory facilities.

The minimum qualification prescribed for the course is a B.Sc degree with physics or chemistry as main subjects with a minimum of 50 per cent marks from any University recognised in India.

Initially, there would be 20 seats for the course which would be increased subsequently based on the demand.

The duration of the course is two semesters of 75 working days each and a minimum of two months field training.

The coir industry would also sponsor candidates and three seats have been kept reserved for such candidates.
