Sustainable development

This refers to the article "An opportunity in Johannesburg" (Business Line, August 22). The key to sustainable development lies in considering the earth as a single entity and not merely as a cluster of different countries, each striving to safeguard its own economic, political and social interests.

It is time the governments of both the developed and developing countries change their perspective and adopt a more integrated and inclusive approach to conserve and improve the environmental and social status of the world en bloc. Another important dimension in this context is that this `world-view' should pervade the consciousness of each and every citizen of the world.

Our efforts should be channelised to bring about the realisation of the responsibility at every level of society for saving this planet from the deleterious effects of human activity. Only then can we ensure the input of genuine and substantive efforts towards sustainable development.
