BANGALORE, Aug 15

WITH the incidence of diabetes increasing in the Silicon City, Trinity Hospital and Heart foundation, a speciality corporate hospital, has decided to open an exclusive cardio-diabetology unit in its heart care centre.

A team of specialists comprising a diabetologist, cardiologist, cardiac surgeon, vascular surgeon and nutritionist will man the unit, according to Dr B.G. Muralidhara, Chairman and Managing Director and Chief Cardiologist, Trinity Hospital and Heart Foundation.

Dr Muralidhara told reporters here today that one person out of eight was prone to diabetes and this being linked to possible heart condition, Trinity Hospital had moved towards providing specialised care to tackle the problem.

The 70-bed Trinity Hospital, set up about a year ago, to cater to the needs of fast expanding southern Bangalore, plans to tie-up with insurance companies and the health industry to extend affordable medical care for diabetes and heart ailments.

The hospital is in talks with Oriental Insurance Company and Kotak Mahindra to work out a scheme to make health insurance affordable. This would considerably help corporate hospitals like Trinity in removing the belief that heart care was beyond the reach of average people, he said.

On the mushrooming of corporate hospitals, he said, "The only distinguishing factor can be the fees charged by different hospitals," adding that competition also helped keep costs at competitive levels for surgical and treatment facilities.

Dr Muralidhara said Trinity had decided to provide virtually free service to children with critical heart ailment by waiving professional fees and charging only the cost of medicines.
