E-Governance TN district administrations getting Web-savvy Our Bureau
CHENNAI, Aug. 8 "Welcome to the city of thousand temples... " says a page on Kancheepuram district's Web site. "Perambalur district (famous for cashew, cotton and cement) welcomes you... " flashes through the screen as you open the district's Web site. "Welcome to Tiruvarur online... India's first e-district in the making... " greets you as the district's home page opens. As Internet usage in the State Government and its department increases, more and more districts are getting themselves hosted on the Web. Kancheepuram district, which shares a border with Chennai, is the latest district in the State to have its own web page. The Web sites of three districts have links provided from the Tamil Nadu Government's Web site. "This is yet another way of being transparent. All that one needs to know about the district, including the Collector's contact numbers, are available on the site. The contact details of the utilities are also provided," a District Collector told Business Line without wanting to be identified. Apart from contact details of various Government departments, the Web sites provide details about the geographical area of the district, a brief profile, tourism destinations, climatic conditions and strengths in terms of industries. Take for instance, Kancheepuram district. The plants of global car manufacturers such as Ford and Hyundai are located in the district, not to mention other multinationals such as Saint-Gobain Glass. The site says about the district's USP: "One of the largest industrial areas of Tamil Nadu, Kancheepuram has the pride of place in being home to vital production bases of international industrial groups such as Ford, Hyundai, Saint-Gobain... " Perambalur district, on the other hand, boasts of its strengths in cashew, cotton and cement. Four cement plants those belonging to Grasim Industries Ltd, Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Ltd, Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation Ltd, a State Government undertaking, and India Cements Ltd are located in the district. Besides, the district highlights its mineral wealth deposits of limestone, fireclay, gypsum, phosphatic nodules and celestite. The Tiruvarur district's site is intended, as the site says, to assist Government departments and IT users in various government departments in Tamil Nadu and the rest of the country through online software and hardware consultancy services, free software downloads, sharing experience in IT development with reference to various fields in Government. This site has been designed for maximum use for district collectors for computerising various government activities at the district level. According to official sources, more and more districts will have their own Web sites as computerisation in the Government increases. Ultimately, this is meant to prevent a layperson from having to trek to the collectorate or taluk office concerned to get forms and find out details.
