Petrol pump controversy

This refers to the editorial, `A controversy doused' (Business Line, August 7).

The Government has cancelled the allotments made after January 2000 except the Kargil victim dependents' cases, knowing fully well that it may have to face litigation steps in majority of the cases.

But, as pointed out, the decision and observations of the apex court cannot be quite different from those during Capt Satish Sarma's regime.

And it should be so, as the common man expects justice only through judicial process nowadays.

Though the Government has taken a right step in the matter, the credentials of the ruling party and the concerned minister are not beyond doubt.

With the new system of bidding the pumps for the highest amount, the individual companies can conduct the process in a more transparent way.

Even if there is some unwanted influence from any quarters, the company may be benefited by extra bid amounts.

But in the process, the priority sectors like dependents of war victims, backward communities, women, should be allowed to get their due share.
