New `sliver machine' to spin coir yarn

COIMBATORE, July 31

A NEW `sliver machine', developed by the Coimbatore-based PSG Polytechnic for spinning coir yarn, is set to revolutionise the industry.

The Coir Board Chairman, Mr Christy Fernandez, who was here in connection with signing an MoU with the institute for commercialising the machine, said it was a significant achievement as the industry had all along depended on the traditional charka in the spinning of coir yarn.

``Ninety per cent of coir yarn is made in the conventional way, by using the charka. We were stuck on a significant input as to how to make an evenly twisted or loose twisted yarn with the hard natural fibre. The development of `sliver machine' has paved the way,'' he said.

Expressing hope that the time-bound (4 months) project would prove an exciting one, Mr Fernandez said the board had extended a financial support of Rs 30 lakh for the project.

Spinning of yarn in the traditional line is an area of major concern in making value-added coir products.

Emphasising the need for exploiting the potential of blending coir with other natural fibres such as banana, pineapple etc, he said the Coir Board and the National Institute of Design had tied-up for developing specific blended products. ``One such product has been certified as good on a laboratory scale. We hope to perfect this technology before the end of the current fiscal,'' he added.

The packaging material from coir fibre was close to reality, he said, adding the product might be introduced very soon.

On the performance of the industry, the Chairman said the total turnover stood at Rs 1,300 crore last year. The industry exported products worth Rs 323 crore. The board was targeting a 8-10 per cent growth during this fiscal, he said.

On the marketing of coir products, he said the board was planning to avail the KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries) network in marketing coir products.
