Accountancy Info-Tech - Education ICAI's IT foray going global D. Murali
CHENNAI, July 10 IN an environment where good news about accountants is as rare as clean air, here is something to cheer the Indian CAs. The Information Technology Committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) is growing strong and also going places. The ICAI started off with the its first exam for the IT post-qualification course called `information systems audit' (ISA) about six months back and the number of chartered accountants enrolling for ISA has touched 4,000, enthusing the institute to hike the fee quietly and ambitiously from Rs 6,000 to Rs 10,000, effective July 1. In spite of the IT slowdown, CAs in metros and mofussil places have been evincing interest in joining the course in hordes, though there are still hiccups with the training agency SSI and the course materials provided by it. In the meantime, the ICAI is entertaining requests from Sri Lanka and UAE to launch ISA for the benefit of Indian CAs living/working there. According to the chairman of the IT committee, Santanakrishnan, there is a proposal to develop online coaching so that it could be given to all the members of ICAI across the globe without requiring them to attend coaching classes physically. Classes in Dubai are slated for September 2002, and initial plan is to conduct 12-day continuous classes every quarter. Similarly, the Sri Lanka initiative would collaborate with the counterpart institute of that country, with the ICAI providing the faculty for a "train the trainer" programme. Another interesting development is the prospect of India becoming the host of the International Federation of Accountants' (IFAC) IT committee. What's being offered from the Indian institute includes infrastructure and facilities in the form of space, staff and expenses to conduct seminars and the like. IFAC is expected to take a final decision on the matter soon.
