IPR Dr Reddy's tops in getting US patents Our Bureau
HYDERABAD, June 16 DR REDDY'S Laboratories leads a select few Indian corporates involved in obtaining international patents, especially from the US. With a total of 24 US patents to its credit, Dr Reddy's is ahead of Ranbaxy Laboratories (20), Panacea Biotec (nine), Dabur Research Foundation (nine), Lupin Laboratories (eight), among the corporates, especially from the drugs and chemicals sector. In terms of sheer numbers, the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), with its string of 40 national laboratories, tops with an impressive tally of 144 patents. Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) with 12 and the National Institute of Immunology (NII), New Delhi with 10 are the other major players from India. While chemicals and drugs dominate the patents scene, software, jewellery, herbal products, electronics and petrochemicals are other areas where Indian companies, research institutes or individuals have shown interest in obtaining US patents, according to a study done by the Patent Facility Centre (PFC) of the Technology Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC). Driven by competition and the changing global trade environment, which is heavily loaded in favour of a patent regime, Indian companies in some sectors are showing a positive trend in increasing their patent profile. As far as US patents are concerned, since 1995, an average growth of 42 per cent has been registered. From a meagre 16 patents, the average number has gone to 119 in 2001. The PFC study said Indian companies, research institutes or individuals obtained a total of 391 patents during the past six years and the cost of this exercise could be of the order of Rs 8-12 crore. Torrent Pharma, Dalmia Centre for Biotechnology, Max India, Vittal Mallaya Scientific Research Foundation, Zydex Industries, Texas Instruments, Premier Polytronics, Indian Herbs Research Co and Gem Energy Industry are the other corporates that have obtained more than two US patents. The Department of Science and Technology (DST), the Ministry of Defence, NRDC are the Government organisations that have also been active. Dr Reddy's Laboratories is engaged in inventing new drug formulations and has also obtained joint patents with Novo Nordisk. Its focus areas are anti-diabetic, tricyclic compounds for medicinal uses, etc. Ranbaxy, on the other hand, is focused on drug delivery systems and dosage forms and overall on generic drugs.
