Karnataka: New agro-processing policy soon

Our Bureau

BANGALORE:A New policy for the agro-processing industry is to be announced by the State Government next week, according to the Agriculture Minister, Mr T.B. Jayachandra.

Addressing a technical seminar organised by the All India Rubber Industries Association, Southern Region, here today the Minister said the draft policy will be presented before the State Cabinet next week for approval.

Responding to the several demands made by the Association, which included providing infrastructural support for research and testing laboratory, Mr Jayachandra said since rubber as a plantation was a mandated crop under the jurisdiction of the Centre, the States could not take an independent stand on the issue.

Lack of local research facility had restricted the State from providing a research support to overcome the problem, he said.

The association also urged the Minister to help them redress their problem with regard to purchase preference and price preference for the special tread rubber being purchased by the Karnataka State Rubber Trading Corporation and Government agencies.

The association said that State Government should reserve agriculture and plantation areas for cultivation of rubber plantation by providing necessary inputs to the cultivators. This would provide a smooth backward linkage for the growing rubber industry of Karnataka.
