KOLKATA, May 17

TWO scientists of the Dhanbad-based Central Fuel Research Institute, Mr Partha Sengupta and Dr S.K. Hazra, have been awarded by the National Research Development Corporation for their invention of a low-cost, environment-friendly and energy-efficient device for production of soft coke.

As estimated by the Planning Commission, soft coke, the common man's fuel for cooking, has a demand of about 13 million tonnes (mt) per annum as against the present production volume of about 5 to 6 mt. Soft coke used to be produced by open stack burning of coal, which has been prohibited by the Union Government to check environmental pollution. Imported sophisticated technologies available were capital- intensive while the technology developed by CFRI entails low capital investment and can be set up in rural and semi-urban areas.

According to CFRI, one 50-tonne-per-day plant can generate direct employment opportunities for at least 14 persons and indirect employment for around 18 persons. A total of 64 units based on the technology invented by CFRI have so far been commissioned in different parts of the country.
