5,000 STD booths to be upgraded to Net kiosks

HYDERABAD, May 16

THE Andhra Pradesh Government is likely to extend support to enable about 5,000 STD/ISD booths to upgrade their centres to become Internet kiosks and thereby also become e-Seva centres by December.

Dr T. Hanuman Chowdary, Advisor, Information Technology and Communication, Andhra Pradesh Government, said that the State Government had in principle decided to give assistance or grant of about Rs 7,000 to Rs 8,000 per booth so that they could seek to upgrade them.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, Mr Chowdary said there were about 85,000 such STD/ISTD booths across the State and all of them had the potential to be upgraded.

However, given the financial constraints and investment issues, the endeavour would be to initially cover 5,000 such booths.

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd had also agreed to allow these booths to upgrade without licence fee, but instead agreed to collect part of the revenue of these booths, he said.
