Our Bureau

HYDERABAD, April 28

SCIENTISTS at the annual group meeting of the All-India Coordinated Project for improvement of sorghum expressed the need for enhancing the productivity of sorghum so as to make the crop profitable for farmers.

Inaugurating the meeting here on Saturday, Dr I. V. Subba Rao, Vice-Chancellor of Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University (ANGRAU), said the yields of sorghum should be increased to at least 15 quintals per hectare from the current level of 8 to 9 quintals.

In this regard, Dr Mangala Rai, Deputy Director General of Indian Council of Agricultural Research, said we should go for research on breeding genetically modified varieties. Dr G.N.P. Rao, former Vice-Chancellor of ANGRAU, said the mode of research should change from mere mechanical and trial system to creative and investigative research.

Dr William D. Dar, Director General of Icrisat, said global level coordination was on to improve sorghum yields.
