Campco seeks clarification on subsidy GO

Our Bureau

MANGALORE, April 25

THE Central Arecanut and Cocoa Marketing & Processing Co-operative Ltd (Campco) has sought to scotch rumours regarding the non-payment of the State Government subsidy to arecanut farmers in Kerala.

Campco has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Government of Kerala as per which the farmers are eligible for a subsidy of Rs 10 per kg of arecanut. The total subsidy of Rs 10 crore — Rs 2 crore per month over a five-month period beginning February 15, 2001 — was to have been distributed through Campco.

However according to the Campco Chairman, Mr B. Nagaraja Shetty, only Rs 50 lakh has been released so far, and that too in the first week of April.

Campco has now sought clarifications and an amendment to the Government order regarding the method to be followed in passing on the subsidy amount to the farmers. Also, the Chairman and directors of Campco will be meeting the Ministers concerned and hold discussions with the Kerala Government on April 29 at Thiruvananthapuram to sort out the issue.
