Cotton Rs 2.88-cr cotton market yard coming up at Adoni Ch. Prashanth Reddy
Construction workers busy at Adoni's new cotton yard in Kurnool District. The yard is scheduled to be opened next month.
Adoni (Kurnool District), March 24 A FULLY-EQUIPPED Rs 2.88-crore cotton market yard is scheduled to be opened next month at Adoni in Kurnool district. The yard is being constructed as a part of the Union Government's Technology Mission on Cotton (TMC), and has modern cleaning and water spraying facilities required for maintaining the quality of cotton. Spread over 15 acres, adjacent to the existing Adoni market yard, the project is being funded through the Rs 1.5-crore grant by TMC. The balance amount is being met by the Adoni Agricultural Market Committee (AAMC). The project is among the nine such market yards being set up in the State under the TMC, but the first to be completed. The cotton market, to be managed by AAMC, will comprise two godowns of 600-tonne capacity each, four covered sheds of 4,000 sq. ft. each and 14 auction platforms spread over an area of 16,000 sq. m. Its construction was delayed by a month due to unseasonal rains in the area. According to the AAMC's Assistant Secretary, Mr K. Sainath Babu, in the absence of a separate market yard for cotton, the cotton boras, kept in the open yards at present, were contaminated by other commodities brought to the auction platforms. As a result, the quality of cotton was being affected. Due to deterioration in the quality, cotton was not exported from Adoni though farmers there produced export-quality cotton, he said. The opening of the new market yard would help solve this problem, he added. Adoni is a major cotton trading centre in Andhra Pradesh. AAMC alone accounts for over Rs 100 crore worth of cotton trade per annum.
