Airbus team report on damage to A-300 soon

Ashwini Phadnis

NEW DELHI, March 13

A THREE-MEMBER team from the European aircraft manufacturing major, Airbus Industrie, which is in India to examine the damaged Airbus A-300 aircraft of Indian Airlines (IA), is likely to submit its report next week.

"Airbus has sent a team of specialists to examine the aircraft. They will provide their findings to IA in the next week or so. It will then be up to the airline to decide with its insurers on how to proceed,'' sources told Business Line.

The Airbus A-300B2 aircraft (VT-EFW), manufactured in 1980, suffered damage on March 8 when it hit the airport security wall while being taxied from the engine run-up bay at the domestic operational area at the Indira Gandhi International airport here.

IA sources said that the aircraft had been "retrieved and brought'' to the hangar in Delhi airport. Earlier, there was an apprehension that the aircraft may have to be ferried to Mumbai as major maintenance work on the Airbus A-300 is normally carried out there. The aircraft had undergone the major A check, which is carried out after 500 hours of flying, on January 19 this year.

However, the incident has not led to any major changes in the operational schedule of the airline. Sources said that the airline was forced to make some minor adjustment in the timings of some flights. IA has a fleet of 56 aircraft including 11 Airbus A-300 aircraft which is considered as the workhorse of the airline.

Meanwhile, IA has been able to save around Rs 7.5 crore on leasing two Airbus A-320 aircraft which are due to arrive by March 20 due to the removal of the three per cent import duty.

The Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, had in the Budget proposals for 2002-03 decided to do away with the 3 per cent import duty on aircraft that had caused an additional financial burden of Rs 8 crore on the airline in the previous year.
