Readymade garments export earnings down

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Feb. 9

EVEN as the country's overall exports are looking up, the export of readymade garments in the first 10 months of the current fiscal continues to be negative.

Figures compiled by the Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) show that exports of readymade garments, which form a substantial chunk of textile exports, to quota countries during April 2000 to January 2001 have been 877.7 million pieces valued at $3,138.7 million.

This represents an increase of 2.67 per cent in terms of quantity but a decrease of 5.91 per cent in terms of value when compared to the same period of the previous fiscal.

Exports to the US during the period under review amounted to 262.4 million pieces valued at $1,479.7 million, an increase of 8.25 per cent in terms of volume but a decrease of 9.32 per cent in terms of value, when compared to April-Jan 2000-01.

Exports of readymade garments to the 15-member European Union (EU) during April-January 2001-02 was 556.7 million pieces valued at $1,471.6 million, which in comparison with the corresponding months of last fiscal year revealed a modest increase of 0.91 per cent in volume but a decrease of 1.95 per cent in terms of value.

Exports to Canada during April-January 2001-02 were 58.6 million pieces valued at $187.4 million, a decrease of 3.62 per cent in terms of volume and 7.73 per cent in terms of value, when compared to April-January 2000-01.

Taking the latest month's performance, exports of readymade garments during the period January 2002 were 122 million pieces valued at $398.4 million, an increase of 6.27 per cent in terms of volume but a decrease of 4.62 per cent in terms of value, when compared to the corresponding month of 2001.

AEPC does not maintain export figures for countries outside bilateral agreement (OBA) and even the figures furnished for quota countries show that the unit value realisation for readymade garments have come down even as there is no distinct decline in quantity shipped to importing countries.
