States Bengal CM rules out VRS for Govt Staff Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Feb. 9 THE West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, has ruled out a voluntary retirement scheme for State Government employees. Answering a question to this effect at the State secretariat here, he said: "The question does not arise - we are opposing all the so called reforms measures being initiated by the Centre." He described the measures as an assault on civil society. Earlier, the State Finance Minister, Dr Ashim Dasgupta, also spoke in the same vein, when asked about the fate of the nine-lakh employees on the State Government's rolls (including school teachers). He said the State Government was concerned over the long-term impact of these policies. "They are implementing these policies for short-term gains - but the measures - like diluting Government stake in profitable PSUs - will have far reaching implications.
