Asia rejecting GM foods?

Our Bureau

MUMBAI: After Europe, where many countries have stopped importing genetically-engineered (GM) products from the US and Argentina and are increasingly turning to non-GE grains from Brazil, it could be Asia to reject products of modified crops.

Main regional economic powers such as Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand are preparing or enforcing regulations and labelling of genetically modified food. China has already published regulations that will impose tight control over GE grain imports and introduce mandatory labelling of GE food.

Thailand has a draft labelling legislation in place and has banned the commercialisation of GE crops in the country. A couple of days ago, in the Philippines, Greenpeace International blocked unloading of 17,000 tonnes US shipment of GE soya destined for the Philippines market.
