Plan to boost joint ventures with Egypt

ABU DHABI, Feb. 3

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) is studying the possibility of Egyptian and Indian companies working together in the COMMESA, EU and West Asian markets through joint ventures and joint production units in Egypt to help boost exports for the two countries.

Mr A.C. Patankar, Principal Advisor, CII, who visited Egypt recently to follow up the implementation of the Business Agenda for Co-operation presented to the Egyptian Ministerial delegation which participated in the recent CII Partnership Summit 2002, held meetings with the Minister for Foreign Trade, Dr Youssef Boutros Ghali, and the Minister for Industry & Technological Development, Dr Aly Fahmy Ibrahim El Saiedi, the Social Fund for Development, the Federation of Egyptian Industries and the Chamber of Engineering Industries.

Mr Patankar, who is visiting the UAE, told Business Line that he presented to the Minister of Industry the CII-SFD Technology Co-operation, which aims at building strategic partnership country development of the manufacturing sector in Egypt with the focus on export-led economic growth with particular reference to SMEs, with the active involvement of the Indian industry.

He said the Minister had agreed to provide leadership, advice and guidance to SFD and CII for successful implementation. The presentation has also been sent to the Prime Minister of Egypt, HE Dr Atef Ebeid.

During his visit, Mr Patankar also explored the possibilities of Indian companies participating in the Egyptian privatisation programmes in spinning and weaving, chemical and fertiliser sectors, and Egyptian companies.
