THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Feb. 2

HAYS Document Management (HDM), the Indian subsidiary of the UK-based Hays plc, has drawn up an expansion programme aimed at creating 5,000 jobs in business process outsourcing (BPO) segment in the country over the next four-five years.

The expansion will begin in the company's two existing facilities in Technopark here and in Chennai where a total of 700 people are currently employed. The programme envisages opening of more centres in the country as and when the company firms up its business plans, according to Mr Eric Selvadurai, Managing Director of Hays' BPO services in Asia.

He said the total investments in the country over the next five years would be £40-50 million. The company's aim was to offer a wide range of IT-enabled services in the country, he added.

Mr Selvadurai said HDM provided a range of specialised back-office services to blue-chip companies in the UK, Europe and North America.

The entire funding for the expansion would be made by the parent company in the UK which recorded a turnover of over 2.4 billion pounds in 2000-01.

The company had acquired 1.4 acres of land in Technopark for the expansion of its operations.

Consequently, the staff strength in the facility there would be raised to 1,000.

The expansion in Chennai would be taken up in two phases and the staff strength would be gradually increased to 1,000, Mr Selvadurai said.

He added that with the excellent skill sets available in the country, the company was confident of gaining greater share in the BPO segment of the Indian market.
