Software Synopsys to increase workforce by 20 pc Vishwanath Kulkarni
BANGALORE, Jan. 28 EDA (Electronic Design Automation) tool major Synopsys Inc is planning to invest $5 million more in its wholly-owned Indian subsidiary Synopsys (India) Pvt Ltd, and increase its workforce by 20 per cent over the next one year. The Managing Director, Synopsys (India) Pvt Ltd, Mr Pradip Dutta, said the company has already invested $25 million in India over the last six years and an additional investment of $5 million is being planned to strengthen the existing R&D set-up this year. Synopsys (India) has some 100 professionals at its R&D division in Bangalore and 20 more would be added this year, Mr Dutta said. The R&D base at Bangalore is considered to be the largest outside the company headquarters in the US. The total strength at Synopsys India is also likely to double soon following the acquisition of Avanti, another EDA player, by the parent company. Synopsys earlier had announced the acquisition of Avanti, which has a development centre in Hyderabad with a team of some 80 professionals. The merger is likely to be completed within the next two months. The acqusition of Avanti is expected to add expertise in the back-end or what is otherwise known as `physical design' area to Synopsys' strength which lies in the front-end design. Synopsys (India) is also expanding its collaboration with various universities in the country. In a bid to enhance the skilled manpower in the VLSI design space, the company through the Ministry of Information Technology has tied up with 17 universities.
