NEW DELHI, Jan. 25

DON'T be surprised if you find the neighbourhood post office selling PCs and mobile phones.

Computing major, HCL Infosystems Ltd (HCL Insys), has tied up with the Department of Post to market its entire range of consumer products through the network of post offices across the country.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to this effect was signed between HCL Insys and Department of Post here on Thursday.

Under this agreement, HCL Insys can display and retail its consumer products such as `Bean Stalk' PC s, Toshiba notebooks, Nokia mobile phones and HCL InfiNet internet access packs through the post offices.

To begin with, a pilot project at six post offices would be undertaken for 3-6 months in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh. Following this, the company would target 500 post offices.

HCL Insys and Department of Post will have a revenue sharing arrangement, details of which were not announced.

"This is a landmark agreement for the Department of Posts. It is our vision to make the department for consumer-focussed and provide value added services,'' said Mr B.N. Som, Secretary, Department of Post.

According to Mr Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman and CEO of HCL Insys, by using the extensive network of post offices, the company would be able to reach out to consumers in the remotest parts of the country.
