NEW DELHI, Jan. 24

THE Union Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, will lead the Indian delegation to the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in New York to be held from January 31 to February 4. Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu, Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, and Mr N.K. Singh, Member, Planning Commission, will also be part of the delegation.

In addition, the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) will have a 40-member CEOs' delegation in New York led by the CII President, Mr Sanjiv Goenka.

Among the prominent industrialists attending the New York meeting are Mr Anil Ambani, Managing Director, Reliance Industries Ltd; Mr Rahul Bajaj, Chairman and Managing Director, Bajaj Auto Ltd; Mr Y.C. Deveshwar, Chairman, ITC Ltd; Mr Adi Godrej, Chairman, Godrej Industries Ltd; Ms Lalita Gupte, Joint Managing Director and COO, ICICI Ltd; Mr N.R. Narayana Murthy, Chief Mentor, Infosys Technologies; Mr Rajendra Pawar, Chairman, NIIT Ltd; and Mr Azim Premji, Chairman, Wipro Ltd.

According to a CII release, Mr Sinha's address at the plenary session assumes significance as he would elaborate on `The global economic outlook'. Thereafter, in a "informal gathering of world economic leaders," Mr Sinha will discuss the priorities for development and emerging market finance with public figures led by Mr Paul Martin, Finance Minister of Canada, and special participation of select G-20 Finance, Foreign Trade and Development Ministers as well as central bank Governors.

In a scenario-based workshop on `Bridging the digital divide: ICT infrastructure for poverty alleviation' the Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister will be discussing the priorities of business, governments, NGOs and international organisations in the use of technology to alleviate poverty.

The Plan panel member, Mr Singh, will share his views on `Rethinking safety and security in business and government' and `Strengthening democracy: Two sides of the same coin?'

Another important event will be a bilateral between CII and the Canadian Government on February 2 in New York.

CII coordinates the `India presence' at the annual meeting of World Economic Forum held every year in Davos and at all the regional summits worldwide.

CII is also the co-partner to the World Economic Forum for the annual India Economic Summit that is held in New Delhi in November-December. The next summit is scheduled from November 24 to 26.
