Information Technology `74 pc of bank operations computerised' Our Bureau
CHENNAI, Jan 24 AS much as 74 of banks' business is through computerised operations, the Central Vigilance Commissioner, Mr N. Vittal, said. The CVC, who had ordered that at least 70 per cent of each bank's business should be computerised by January 1, 2001, said that as of that date, 24 out of the 27 nationalised banks had met the target. Mr Vittal was here in connection with the launch of the 120th anniversary celebrations of the Sriman Madhwa Siddhanta Onnahini Permanent Nidhi Ltd, here. He noted that when he took over as the CVC in 1998, only 10,000 of the 65,000-odd branches of the nationalised banks had been computerised. Mr Vittal stressed that although the main objective of computerisation was good customer service, a useful by-product was countering corruption. In this connection, he lauded the SMSO Nidhi, which has computerised all its nine offices.
