BANGALORE, Jan. 24

TELECOM satellite Insat-3C, which was launched in the early hours today from the European Kourou spacepad, is showing normal performance.

The 2,750-kg satellite is the second in the third generation Insat series and is meant to replace 2C, launched nearly 10 years ago.

The satellite is expected to reach the final slot and become operational in two-three weeks, ISRO officials said. Gradually, HECL, RBI bank networks, and other business systems that 2C hosts are likely to be moved over to the new satellite.

Carrying 33 transponders, 3C has been built to last 12 years and will cater to telecom, broadcasting, business communications and also mobile services. The satellite cost ISRO Rs 250 crore and the exclusive launch on the Arianespace vehicle another Rs 350 crore, ISRO sources said.

Starting tomorrow, the orbit will be continuously raised from the Hassan Master Control Facility over the next few days. The solar panel deployments may be completed by this month-end, a spokesman said.

Around June this year, ISRO expects to add another 24 transponders with 3A, and 36 more transponders with the launch of 3E early next year.

This would take the capacity build-up to around 100 in the next one-year. ISRO estimates the transponder demand to be around 250 in 10 years. ISRO launched 3B, the last satellite, in March last year.
