PSU Plea against closure of SAIL units Our Bureau
KOLKATA, Jan. 24 MR Jibon Roy, CPI(M) Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, has sought the intervention of Mr Brajo Kishore Tripathy, the Union Steel Minister, to stop the closing down of marketing units of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL). In a letter to the Minister, the MP said the plea of non-viability of the units being used by the management was untenable. In respect of all the branches and stockyards identified for closure, there has been vehement opposition from the associations of the local industries. He pointed out that the location of all the branches of the Central Marketing Organisation and the stockyards were strategic in terms of concentration of steel-consuming industries. Mr Roy was also peeved that while conducting the exercise for identifying the branches, the unions were never consulted although such a move was likely to impact employees' service conditions and job security.
