`Ageless beauties' steal auto show

NEW DELHI, Jan. 23

THEY had no Sachin Tendulkar to announce their presence. Nor any model or mega show to draw the crowd.

Yet the Chevrolets, Cadillacs, Mustangs, Rolls-Royces, Mercedes, Buicks and Morrises that studded the roads of yester-years remained a big hit at the just-concluded Auto Expo 2002, along with their `noveaux riche' siblings.

The ageless beauties evoked such a good response from the million-odd visitors at the sixth edition of the largest automotive display in this part of the world, that their owners must have already begun an anxious wait to showcase their proud jewels at the next edition two years hence.

On show was a 1938 Rolls-Royce Phantom-III with an amazing engine ignited by no less than 24 spark plugs.

A saloon with sliding roofs, it was one of the proud possessions of the Maharaja of Darbangha. Then, there was the MB 220, a Mercedes Benz of 1956 vintage.

It had participated in the World Rally at the UK as the only official Indian entry amongst the 473 cars from 47 countries.

``We do not need an ambassador to showcase these cars. On the contrary, any ambassador or a model would feel proud to be introduced by one of these cars,'' said an organiser of the Auto Expo. The Heritage Motoring Club of India intends to promote more such exhibitions of these ``ageless beauties'' as they would also raise the awareness level of people and also encourage the owners of today's cars to preserve them in top condition.

Special members of this club include a Lagonda, which was owned by the Princess Zubeida of Jodhpur many decades ago and is possibly the only one of its kind in the world.
