Plea against delay in drug policy

Our Bureau

NEW DELHI, Jan. 23

THE Indian Drug Manufacturers' Association (IDMA) has urged the Centre not to delay the new drug policy and the revised Drug Price Control Order (DPCO) any further.

Mr G. Wakankar, Executive Director, IDMA, told newspersons that it was a fallacy that prices would explode if the controls were scrapped. Citing an ORG-MARG study, he added: "The price increase in decontrolled formulations in 1998 over 1997 was just four per cent — marginally more than the wholesale price index of 3.5 per cent. In 2000, the price increase was just 2.2 per cent when compared to 1999.''

IDMA also recommended that price control must apply to a single ingredient formulation with a turnover of over Rs 50 crore, a market share of more than 50 per cent and where there are less than 10 formulators.

The association called for an exemption from price control for the following categories namely new drugs, novel drug delivery systems, drugs with bio-technical processes and veterinary products. It has also called for total removal of price control on bulk drugs.
