Karnataka begins copra buys

Our Bureau

MANGALORE: With the Karnataka Government having decided to offer a minimum support price for copra, preparations are underway in all the districts to open procurement centres where the farmers can hand over their produce.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district, Mr A.K. Monnappa, said the procurement would be co-ordinated by various Government agencies including Nafed, Markfed and APMC, apart from the Departments of Revenue and Horticulture.

While there are fixed quality specifications, the Government has also fixed an upper limit of 4,500-5,000 quintals for procurement at a price of Rs. 3,300 per quintal of `milling copra' and Rs. 3,550 for `ball copra.'

Plummeting prices of coconut had sent farmers running for cover all over the State. About 12,000 hectares in the district are under coconut cultivation and around 15,000 farmers are expected to benefit from the scheme.
