Concrete road projects

India is launching an ambitious project of constructing (or upgrading) what is now known as the golden quadrilateral of National Highways, connecting the major metropolitan cities, of around 7,000 km costing about Rs 60,000 crore, in ten years.

Since these arterial highways will carry a huge volume of traffic, including heavy vehicles, it would be advisable to examine the feasibility and desirability of constructing them with concrete.

The Transport Ministry should make a comprehensive study of the cost-effectiveness and long-term savings in maintenance cost if roads are laid using concrete, and come out with suggestions on the adoption of concreting, where it is economical.
