CHENNAI, Dec. 12

THE Finance Minister, Mr Yashwant Sinha, is to inaugurate the golden jubilee regional conference of the southern chapter of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).

The two-day conference, which begins on December 15, will focus on issues like accounting standards and new professional avenues for chartered accountants, according to Mr L. Ravi Sankar, Chairman, Southern India Regional Council of ICAI.

Speaking to newspersons on Wednesday, he said that the conference will also feature some topics not directly related to the accounting profession. For example, there is a scheduled session on `Economic value addition as a tool to increase shareholders' w ealth'.

Mr Tejpavan Gandhok, Vice-President and Country Manager, Stern Stewart India Pvt Ltd, will speak on the subject.

Dr K.P. Misra, Cardiologist, Apollo Hospitals, will deliver a lecture on `Health care for professionals'.

A spiritual dimension to the event will be provided by Shri Jaggi Vasudev, who will speak on `Inner engineering for effortless living'.

Mr Ravi Sankar said that the technical session on accounting standards will discuss issues such as how to harmonise accounting standards with the Income-Tax Act and bridging the gap between Indian and global accounting standards.

There will also be a special session on `Special features on taxation of business income'.

This has particular relevance because many changes in the IT provisions have rendered narrowing down of the gap between business income and income calculated according to the IT Act, for taxation purposes, Mr Ravi Sankar said.

Mr L. Ganesh, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, Rane Engine Valves Ltd, and Mr S. Mahalingam, Executive Vice-President, TCS, will speak on the emerging opportunities for chartered accountants.
