The reduction in the cash-reserve ratio of two percentage points was more than expected, and will release substantial funds to banks for additional lending or investment at higher returns. The additional liquidity will, however, lead to a further fall in interest rates, hurting the small savers who depend upon deposit interest as a significant source of income.
