Birla institute to set up centre in Goa

Our Bureau

COIMBATORE, Oct. 11

THE Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, will set up a centre in Goa at a cost of Rs 80 crore.

The preliminary works have already begun and the admissions will commence for the academic year beginning in 2003, according to Dr S. Venkateswaran, Director, BITS, Pilani.

He said Zuari Chemicals had given 177 acres of land for the institute. Around 2,500 students will be admitted as of now.

He told newspersons here after signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Bannari Amman Institute of Technology (BIT), Sathyamangalam, promoted by the Bannari Amman Sugars group, that BITS had already entered into similar MoUs with the Katmand u University in Nepal and the Chandrasekara University in Kancheepuram.

He said BITS would participate in HRD needs of BIT, specifically training its faculty members through higher degree and off-campus doctoral programmes of BITS, Pilani. The BITS students would also have access to industrial units under the Bannari Amman g roup for practical training.

He said BITS would offer consultancy services for restructuring of curriculum, examination system and improvement in teaching methodology, etc. BITS itself was a beneficiary of reach-out programmes during its formative years in early 1960s and it wanted to help out upcoming institutes now.

He said several new courses such as bio-technology offered high potential. What one should look for is a balanced development in which apart from pure IT courses other engineering subjects such as civil, mechanical, etc., which also needed IT, should be nurtured.

Mr S.V. Balasubramaniam, Chairman, Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, was confident that the tie-up with BITS would further enhance the BIT's image and would be mutually beneficial.
