Airbus `cautiously optimistic'

Our Bureau

MUMBAI, Oct. 11

AIRBUS Industrie has reduced its aircraft production and imposed a freeze on recruitment on account of the slowdown impacting airline industry worldwide following September 11 attacks in the US.

Airbus Industrie is likely to deliver 320 aircraft during 2001, down by 10 aircraft from the earlier estimate of 330.

``There is a short-term effect of the September events, but we are cautiously optimistic in the medium term,'' Mr David Velupillai, Regional Manager Press Relations, Airbus Industrie, said.

He said the company has not had any cases of order cancellations so far. However, some airlines in North America want to postpone aircraft deliveries, he said.

In the wake of terror attacks involving hijack of airplanes, the aircraft manufacturer is in the process of enhancing security systems on its aircraft. ``We are working on two areas -- reinforcing the door between the cockpit and the cabin and enhancing communication between pilots and cabin crew,'' he said. Airbus is looking at measures in the short term.

Airbus is also working with Hindustan Aeronauticals Ltd (HAL) for stronger aircraft doors. So far, HAL has delivered 250 aircraft doors to Airbus.

``However, we have to look at other safety issues while redesigning the door,'' Mr Velupillai said.

Airbus, according to him, has been careful in avoiding large peaks and troughs. Therefore, it is not likely to be impacted in a major way.

Normally, Airbus secures 50 per cent of the aircraft orders annually but this year, the order share has risen to 62 per cent.
