Tea exports to touch 200 mkg

NEW DELHI: Tea exports from the country is expected to touch a level of about 200 million kilogram during 2001-02 despite the general demand sluggishness in the world markets, according to Mr N.K. Das, Chairman, Tea Board.

Mr Das told reporters here at the 14th session of the inter-governmental group on tea that such a performance should be praiseworthy considering the ``over-supply'' situation in the world markets.

He said tea production during the current year was expected to touch 846 mkg, which was almost the same as last year.

On imports of tea, Mr Das said there had been a slight decline in the first five months to 5 mkg. Last year, total tea imports was about 13-14 mkg. -- Our Bureau
