Non-veg foods to be labelled from Oct 4

NEW DELHI, Sept. 26

THE Ministry of Health has notified that when any article of food contains whole or part of any animal including bird, fresh water or marine animals or eggs or products of any animal origin, excluding milk and milk products, as an ingredient, a declarati on to this effect shall be made by the manufacturer.

The provisions of the notification dated April 4, 2001 shall come into force with effect from October 4, 2001, according to an official release.

The declaration should display prominently a symbol consisting of a brown filled circle having a diameter not less than the minimum height specified (in the table), inside the square with brown outline having sides measuring double the diameter of the ci rcle, on the package having contrast background on principal display panel, just close in proximity to the name or brandname of the product, and on the labels, containers, pamphlets, leaflets and advertisements in any media.

According to an official release, the manufacturers of food article may also give a separate declaration in addition to the symbol when any article of food contains only egg as a non-vegetarian ingredient.
