NEW DELHI, May 1

THE Supreme Court has indicated that notices may have to be issued to all private companies and non-tribals to whom land in scheduled areas stands leased/allotted.

The apex court gave this indication when the three writ petitions transferred from Delhi and Chhatisgarh High Courts on the Balco divestment case came up for hearing before a three-judge Bench on Tuesday.

During the hearing, the Supreme Court directed that the workers consider the offer made by the Balco management through its counsel to pay some amount as advance to the workers which could be adjusted later on, provided they join duty before the next dat e of hearing of the case on May 8.

During the proceedings, the counsel for Balco management reiterated that the shareholders' agreement between the Union Government and Sterlite Industries Ltd provides for adequate protection for the employees besides ensuring that there will not be any r etrenchment of workers.
