March coffee exports rise: ICO
MUMBAI: World coffee exports picked up considerable momentum in March after a somewhat sober previous two months. Export data released by International Coffee Organisation (ICO) showed a provisional 8.58 million bags (60 kilograms each) during the month,
up from 7.64 million in February and 6.61 million bags in January 2001.
Robustas accounted for a significant increase during the month to 3.09 million bags from 2.46 million bags in February, propped up by larger shipments from Vietnam, Indonesia and a host of African origins including, significantly, Ivory Coast. Export of
Brazilian Naturals totalled 1.73 million bags (1.48 million bags), with shipment from Brazil recovering to 1.54 million bags.
ICO statistics disclosed coffee shipment from India reached a season high of 7.21 lakh bags in March, up from 4.99 lakh bags in February and 2.66 lakh bags in January 2001. With this, October 2000-March 2001 shipment from India totalled 19.33 lakh bags,
slightly down from 20.56 lakh bags shipped out during the same period in 1999-2000.
For the financial year April 2000-March 2001, India's coffee shipments aggregated 43.78 lakh bags, up from 41.64 lakh bags in the previous year, according to ICO.-- Our Bureau
