Research on nematode control at TNAU

COIMBATORE: A research scheme on integrated nematode management to control nematodes in flower crops such as Crossandra and Tuberose is to be implemented at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU).

The Rs 5.86-lakh project, sanctioned by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), would focus on evolving an integrated approach for the control of nematode pests in these two flower crops with oil cakes and through biological means.

While nematicides help control parasitic nematodes, they are either not available or too expensive, besides causing environmental pollution, say TNAU sources.

It is learnt that in recent years, there is a marked decline in the cultivation of Crossandra and Tuberose in Coimbatore, Salem and Madurai districts because of poor establishment and wilting. An 80-per cent yield loss has been estimated in nematode-affl icted crop. -- Our Bureau
