Need to build up food-for-work schemes

NEW DELHI: The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) has suggested that a portion of the overflowing foodgrain stocks be utilised for building rural infrastructure.

In a statement, the chamber said that food-for-work programmes should be developed to finance rural infrastructure projects, especially roads, provide jobs and also boost rural demand.

Assocham has also expressed concern over the slow pace of disbursal of loans under the Rural Infrastructure Development Funds (RIDF). It has called for immediate measures to step up the disbursement of funds under the RIDF scheme. -Our Bureau
