Lara Networks plans to set up design centre

BANGALORE, Aug. 28

LARA Networks, a provider of network application processors, has announced plans to set up a design and development centre in Bangalore. The company is planning to invest about $2 millions in setting up the centre.

Mr. Kamal Gunsagar, CEO, Lara Networks, said, ``With the Internet becoming the medium of choice for mission critical applications such as e-commerce, multimedia communications, entertainment and education, increasing pressure is being placed on network p rocessing bandwidth.''

He added: ``Lara's network application processor (NAP) family of products address these needs and are being designed into next generation gibabit and terabit routers.''

The Bangalore centre will develop products for Lara in the broadband switching and network application processor areas. It is expected that the Bangalore development centre will begin operations in September, 2000.

Lara Networks is currently focusing on developing a set of broadband switching solutions for the optical Internet based on 1Gb/s and 10Gb/s ethernet technologies.

The company recently announced that it had acquired WarpCom Technologies, a leading ethernet switching company in San Jose, to jump-start its broadband switching solutions development.

Mr. Jayan Ramankutty, President and COO, Lara Networks, said: ``As Lara Networks grows rapidly to address the fast growing broadband switching and network processing market, additional resources are required to be deployed, in order to rapidly develop le ading edge products.''

He added: ``We decided to be in India to tap the rich pool of talent here and the proactive policies of the Karnataka government in the IT sector has made it easy for us to set up our design and development center in Bangalore.''
