Kerala seeks Rs. 100 cr flood relief
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has sought special Central assistance of Rs. 100 crores to combat the damages caused by the monsoon rains.
The Chief Minister, Mr. E.K. Nayanar, has requested the Prime Minister to send a high-level team to Kerala, as has been done in the case of Andhra Pradesh, to assess the damages.
In a letter to the Prime Minister, he has said that the heavy rains in the last one week has wreaked havoc in the State. Eighty nine people had died due to floods and landslips. And that the rains caused extensive damages to agricultural crops, including
cash crops and roads.
The State had witnessed unprecedented instances of sea erosion in the early phase of the monsoon causing damage to the houses of fishermen and their fishing gear. The State had sought Central assistance of Rs. 10 crores in June which had not been sanctio
ned till date, the Chief Minister said in the letter.
The State Government has adopted emergency measures to provide relief to those affected by the rains in recent days. Hundreds of relief camps have been opened and free ration has been distributed to flood victims. The health authorities have also taken s
