GAIL to supply LNG in Gujarat by 2003

NEW DELHI, Aug. 13

GAS Authority of India Ltd (GAIL) will commence LNG supply to customers in Gujarat by 2003-04, according to an official release.

According to the release, addressing senior officials in Baroda on Saturday, the GAIL Chairman and Managing Director, Mr. C.R. Prasad, said that the company would lay a pipeline for bringing the regassified LNG at Dahej to meet the consumer demand in Guj arat as well as interlink Dahej with the HBJ pipeline.

To handle the additional gas form the Dahej terminal, GAIL is increasing the capacity of the HBJ pipeline from the present 33.4 mmscmd to over 60 mmscmd. The investment in the proposed pipeline in Gujarat and for increasing the capacity of the HBJ pipeli ne would be over Rs. 4,000 crores.

GAIL is the principal marketeer of the six-million tonnes LNG sold by Petronet LNG at its regassification terminal at Dahej. Petronet is sourcing its gas from RasGas of Qatar.

Of the total import of six million tonnes, 0.65 million tonnes is expected to be available for distribution by July 2003, increasing to 2.5 million tonnes by January 2004 and up to five million tonnes by January 2005.
