CPT unions against rollback of retirement age
THE Calcutta port has shelved, at least for the time being, the proposal to rollback the retirement age from 60 years to 58 in the face of stiff opposition from the workers' representatives on the board of the Calcutta Port Trust (CPT). The Calc utta Dock Labour Board (CDLB) too has disapproved the proposal, according to CDLB sources.

Oil goes west
THANKS to changes in the import policy and drought conditions experienced by Gujarat, edible oil imports through the west coast ports of Kandla and Mundhra have spurted this season. Gains made by these two ports have been at the cost of Mumbai, which has lost considerable volume, though it still commands a good share.

Shedding flab at major ports.... -- A VRS with a different `wave'length
HAVING signed a new wage agreement with the workers federations recently, the Ministry of Surface Transport is now focussing on sweetening the Voluntary Retirement Scheme (VRS) at major ports in a bid to attract more workers and slim the blo ated workforce to impart efficiency in port operations.

EVER SINCE the Container Corporation of India (Concor) started operations in the eastern region to handle containers for domestic movement, it has been encountering a major problem -- a mismatch between the supply of and demand for containers, t he supply exceeding the demand.

THE computerised booking of railway tickets for passengers has made considerable progress in the past few years, so much so that one can book a ticket for undertaking a journey by train in any part of the country, even from remote Port Blair in the Andam ans. However, online booking is yet to take off in respect of goods, though a move is afoot to achieve this as early as possible.
