SAARC workshop from today

NEW DELHI, Aug. 2

A TWO-DAY sub-regional workshop on trade facilitation in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) region begins from Thursday with a view to exchange experiences and identify priority issues and work out the co-operation methodology i n cross-border trade facilitation.

Jointly being organised by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the UN Economic and Social Commission, the workshop would be inaugurated by the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Omar Abdullah, while the Commerce Secretary, Mr. Prabhir Sengupta would deliver the closing statement on August 4.

Member countries of the seven-nation SAARC region are taking up a project titled ``Facilitating intra and inter sub-regional trade in the SAARC region'' and the workshop is being organised to operationalise this project. The deliberations would also cove r the areas of paper-based transactions as well as its transfer on to the electronic mode i.e., e-commerce, an official release said here.
