Chennai port `not hit by pilots strike'

Our Bureau

CHENNAI, June 5

THE Chennai Port Trust (ChPT) pilots are on strike from Saturday afternoon protesting the induction of contract pilots by the port trust. The strike, however, has not affected berthing and deberthing of vessels, according to officials.

A senior official said four contract pilots were recruited on Saturday to offset the shortage of pilots at the port. This, however, was objected to by the port trust pilots, who stopped handling the vessels from Saturday afternoon, he said.

The official said the Harbour Master and the Deputy Port Conservator, along with the contract pilots are now berthing and deberthing the vessels.
